Decisions
A decision is the record an ADR board carries: a number such as ADR-7, a status the owner moves from Draft to Accepted, and an owner. The board is the body, where you draw the options and write the reasoning; the record is where the decision stands, so that people and agents can tell a proposal from a rule.
Every board of type ADR has one. It appears in a bar under the board's tabs, in the Decisions tab of the hub's Context boards card, and on any work item that points at it.
Record a decision
- Create a board and choose the ADR type. The record opens as Draft, numbered after the last decision in the workspace, with you as its owner.
- Draw and write the decision on the board. The canvas and the board's notes are the body; there is no template.
- Choose Propose in the bar when it is ready for a verdict.
ProvenMap does the same from Chat or the workspace plugin's /adopt-adr: create_decision_board makes the board with its record, and propose_decision puts it forward.
Settle a decision
Accept, Reject and, once accepted, Deprecate are the owner's. An organization owner or admin can also settle any decision. Each asks for an optional note, kept on the record with your name and the date. Withdraw takes a proposed decision back to a draft; Reopen does the same for a rejected one.
Nothing a plugin or Chat does accepts, rejects or deprecates a decision. An agent can draft and propose; a person decides.
Changed since accepted
Accepting a decision pins the board as it stands. If anyone later adds, removes, renames or re-describes an element, or rewrites the board's notes, the bar shows Changed since accepted. Moving, resizing or restyling elements does not count: a reviewer approved the content, not the arrangement.
The board is never locked. When the change is a new decision rather than a correction, supersede it instead.
Supersede a decision
Choose Supersede with a new decision on an accepted or deprecated decision and name the replacement. A new ADR board opens as a draft that says Supersedes ADR-n. Accepting the replacement retires the old decision as Superseded in the same step; the old board stays, with a link forward to the decision that replaced it.
Point work at a decision
A work item can name the decision it records or carries out. Pick it in the work item editor, under the epic. The detail panel then shows the decision's number, status and board, and /work-items hands the developer the same line, so a coding session can tell which rule the work serves and whether that rule is accepted yet. See Work items.
On a published board
A published ADR board shows the decision's number, status and the date it was settled. It never shows the owner, the note or who else was involved, because a published board can be public.
FAQ
Can I change a board's type away from ADR?
Not while it holds a record. A decision board keeps its type; deprecate or supersede the decision instead. A board that takes the ADR type gains a record at that moment.
What happens to the record when the board is deleted?
It goes with the board. Work items that pointed at it lose the link and change in no other way; a decision that named it as superseded keeps its own status.
